Diabetic control among patients fasting Ramadan

Unread post by rasha abu algasim »

diabetic control among patients fasting Ramadan : this is a small survey interviewed 140 patients attending Soba University Hospital outpatient clinic advised them regarding fasting , took investigations & adjusted their medications . some of them fasted and some of them didn't fast . Based on HbA1c results fasting didn't appear to affect the level of diabetes control among those patients ( fasted or didn't fast ) .
CONCLUSION : fasting didn't have a detrimental effect on diabetes control in the patients followed up ..

How would HbA1c be a determinant in a single month (30 days)?

HbA1c is the measurement of Glycated Hb, which is the Hemoglobin (Hb) that gets glycated because of the average concentration of glucose in the blood. Once the Hb in a red cell becomes glycated, it remains that way for the end of life of that RBC (RBC life cycle) = 90-120 days

This is why we monitor HbA1c every 3-4 months (not monthly)

The study should not draw such a conclusion, unless you make the fasting arm of the sample fast for 3-4 months, because a single month is not enough to reflect the change in HbA1c among fasting diabetic individuals

this is a personal opinion, please correct me if I am wrong ..

thank u dear fo sharing the result of ur study with us
iwould like to add my voice to dr Hani
2nd ithink we need more details about ur pts
age type of medications and how u adjusted as u told what inves u did to follow
ithink the study shoud target and concentrate on hypoglycaemic attacs this is more risky than the controll which will not be affected as much
